Death Grips are online
US Rock/RnB/Hip-Hop group ‘Death Grips’ are back with a brand new studio album following the release of 2016s ‘Bottomless Pit’. ‘Year of the snitch’ is a typical album made over the last two year hiatus, throughout 2017 the band teasing on their social media’s “Death Grips Is Online” with rather obscure imagery attached to the posts.
As 2017 was drawing to its close, the band released a 24 minute song entitled ‘Steroids’ (Crouching Tiger), which had fans believe that this was the title for their new album.
By March 2018 ‘Death Grips’ announced their title and the release date of the new album, which would be the 22nd June 2018. A couple months passed when fans were given a preview of their outlandish album cover which again contained pretty fucked up imagery and first single ‘Streaky’.
This album has more of a devolved sound than the last album with songs like ‘Shitshow, ‘Black Paint and ‘Death Grips is Online’ showing the profound influence of metal on the band, with frontman ‘MC Ride’ using screaming vocals throughout most of this album. ‘Year of the Snitch’ has another set of brilliant instrumentals with the album containing the heavy sound of drum, synth, and echo effects and delay adding a vibe of creepy loneliness to the majority of tracks.
My personal favourite songs that stuck out to me were ‘Dilemma and Shitshow’. When I first heard these particular tracks, I was taken back to the first time I heard the band and they have still got it after splitting up and coming back and releasing new albums.
Album Rating 4/5
