Podcast of the Month: ROLLING STONE MUSIC NOW
Alex Matthew
October’s theme for Podcast of the Month is “Music” and “Rolling Stone Music Now” is one of the best available for audiophiles with it’s high quality professionalism and world-class guests resulting in endless hours of worthwhile listening.
It should come as no surprise that renowned music magazine Rolling Stone’s podcast is in fact also a radio-show seamlessly converted to the alternative format. The podcast serves as a worthwhile extension to the magazine and manages the precarious balancing act of maintaining a professional sheen whilst also sounding blissfully casual as if the podcast were simply a couple of music nerds discussing their passion over a couple beers late one Friday evening.
What’s even more impressive is the calibre and frequency of high quality guests the podcast attains. In the last year or so alone they’ve spoken to musical legends such as Iggy Pop, Liam Gallagher, Fleetwood Mac, Roger Daltrey (The Who), Nile Rodgers, Paul Banks (Interpol), Peter Hook (Joy Division/New Order) and Tom Petty (an unheard interview recorded prior to his death). Each conversation is well conducted with personal well thought out questions which provide for engaging listening and more often than not produce unheard revelations.
As well as fascinating interviews with musical royalty they also provide in depth discussions surrounding important topics from the history of music. The conversations provide interesting unheard information showing the show’s dedication to researching it’s well chosen topics whilst charming anecdotes help to maintain the laid-back conversational style. Highlights of this variety include “Bowie and The Secret History of Sci-Fi Rock”, “The Story of The Strokes - and NYC Rock’s Most Decadent ‘00s Moments” and “The Long Life and Slow Death of Classic Rock”.
Effortlessly hosted by the ever affable Rolling Stone journalist Brian Hiatt Rolling Stone Music Now succeeds in it’s playful professionalism, endlessly intriguing interviews and fascinating discussions which journey into various aspects of music history. It’s plentiful variety of episodes allow the podcast to cater to both lovers of modern music and those who like to enjoy something a little older.
