Podcast of the Month: THE ADAM BUXTON PODCAST
Alex Matthew
September’s theme for “Podcast of the Month” is “The Interview” and Adam Buxton’s charming, rambling style results in hours of audio entertainment as he candidly chats with some of the finest musicians, actors and people of general interest working today.
Packing previous experience a plenty after co- hosting Radio 6’s “Adam and Joe” for over four years Adam Buxton seemed like a superb fit to start up his own podcast. Although you wouldn’t be blamed for having some slight reservations, after all at the core of his success was the brilliant interplay between himself and fellow double act member Joe Cornish. However Buxton’s solo career has been a relieving roaring success, perhaps even more so than he or anybody else for that matter thought it could have been.
At the centre of his fantastic formula is how freewheeling and “off-mic” his casual chats appear. Not only does this make for hilarious results (see Louis Theroux singing “Yes sir I can boogie” karaoke style in high falsetto) but this also enables Buxton to get the best from his well chosen guests. By carefully creating conversations which are so refreshingly relaxed, he successfully coaxes his guests out of their shell until they are at their most revealing which results in maximum interest and fascination from a listener’s perspective.
For someone approaching Buxton’s podcast for the first time, his impressive back catalogue contains 78 excellent interviews with a colourful cast of varying characters to cover all interests. He’s chatted to world class musicians and producers such as Johnny Marr, Brian Eno and Jonny Greenwood. He’s happily conversed with some of Hollywood’s greatest directors such as Wes Anderson, Edgar Wright and Paul Thomas Anderson. Whilst the creme de le creme of British comedians have all made appearances and of course who can forget the always delightful highlight that is documentary star Louis Theroux.
“The Adam Buxton Podcast” works beautifully in it’s laidback format which allows not only for great entertainment value but also by cleverly extracting intriguing anecdotes and opinions from guests which they’ve not let slip before. All of this comes together to craft a delightful podcast well worth checking out for those who may have not yet had an encounter with the rambling renegade so far.
