"Poptones Unleashes New Album 'Pure' Today"
Danish experimental rock trio Poptones has officially released their highly anticipated second album, “Pure,” now available on all digital platforms and vinyl via Happy Metal Records. This 12-track album marks a significant expansion of the band’s artistic direction, blending improvisation, collaboration, and an array of genres. Alongside the album’s release, they have introduced their focus track, “17 Hours.”
The songs on “Pure” reflect an eclectic mix of influences, written and developed in a variety of locations including Copenhagen, India, Italy, and even the historical house of former Danish Prime Minister Jens Otto Krag. The album is a joyful collision of spontaneity and meticulous composition, fusing solo sketches with group improvisations, showcasing the band’s evolution and adventurous spirit.
Musically, “Pure” defies conventional categorization, seamlessly shifting between elements of prog-rock, hardcore, indie, and avant-rock. It incorporates a wide range of instruments, including saxophone, vibraphone, and lap steel, juxtaposed against the traditional rock backdrop of bass, drums, and guitar. This diverse instrumentation pushes Poptones’ sound into new and unpredictable territories.
The recording of “Pure” was skillfully handled by Peter Emil Sloth, with mixing by Jens Ramon and mastering by E.T. Master. Notable contributions on the album include saxophonist Oscar Alstrup and hardcore vocalist Victor Kaas, who makes a powerful appearance on the track “Mirror World.” Additionally, unique post-composed improvisations feature vibraphonist Rémy Gouffault and guitarist Harald Ingvarsson.
For the trio—Mads Bertelsen (vocals/bass), Simon Hiemstra (guitar), and Anders Poulsen (drums)—this album embodies both a sense of continuity and an expansion of their artistic vision. Having forged their friendship through music since childhood, Poptones began performing together on Denmark’s west coast before refining their sound at the Rhythmic Music Conservatory in Copenhagen. Their debut album, “Between Darkness & Daylight” (2022), introduced a band unafraid of exploration, and “Pure” takes that adventurous spirit a step further.
Simon Hiemstra shares insights into the album, describing “Pure” as both a compilation of varied ideas and a cohesive project. Each track originates from different inspirations, drawing from a diverse list of musical genres, reflecting a decade of musical exploration as a band. Their goal was to create an honest representation of their journey, highlighting the balance between chaos, beauty, and the nuances that exist in between.
Available now, “Pure” invites listeners to dive into the depths of Poptones’ creative journey. The album is accessible for listening and purchasing through various music platforms.
