Sea Girls Reveal Video For Their Latest Single ‘Do You Really Wanna Know?’
London formed indie rock band Sea Girls released the first single from their debut album ‘Open Up Your Head’ at the end of April in time for the lovely weather we’ve been having. The song itself fits with the band’s current discography perfectly, it’s up-beat and summery, and definitely has me counting down until the album release in August! The boys dropped an official music video for the new release ‘Do You Really Wanna Know?’ on May 26th and I think it really captures the essence of the song.
While Sea Girls do not necessarily reinvent the indie summer jam wheel, they construct a rebellious summer anthem that mixes well as we enter a time when simply being able to leave your front door and be outside feels like we have been given the keys to the kingdom. The music video is an accurate visual depiction of the lyrical content, and although this concept may seem rather simple it’s not so common that a music video manages to adopt this method so effectively. At first watch it felt like an Art Attack episode intro (specifically 56 seconds in), but in a good way, it’s creative with the use of various materials and mediums without being overwhelming or appearing cluttered, and intertwines well and intentionally with the lyrics in the track. It feels like a collage that has come to life.
The use of the art style expressionism by animator Francesca de Bassa in the video helps to evoke the idea of change we hear in the song, it is cleverly displayed in the constant change of colours and shapes, as well as bizarre images of fish, flowers and all sorts to make it appear more surreal and psychedelic. The use of bright colours and montages of funky shapes keeps with the happy, go-lucky feeling of the song as well as making us feel like we are “travelling through dimensions of everyday fantasy” as the band put so eloquently when they announced the release of the video. One of my favourite clips from the video is during the second pre-chorus when drummer Oli Khan rides across the screen on a lobster with a feline friend, and if that sentence doesn’t at least intrigue you to watch the video then I don’t know what will! The video has reoccurring images of the senses, with blinking eyes and talking hands, which reminds me of the visuals Kings of Leon used on set during their WALLS tour.
I highly recommend adding this tune to your summer playlist, and in saying that I urge you to watch the video alongside it as I believe it adds another layer to the song, it’s also just a really fun piece of work that deserves an audience!
