The 1975 - Love It If We Made It
While fans of The 1975 patiently await the release of their next album, ‘A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships’, the band have released the second single - ‘Love It If We Made It’ - and it is not to be missed!
For some time now, The 1975 have been able to incorporate an 80s electronic vibe into a number of their songs through their use of synth, and their latest single carries this same feature. The contrast between nostalgic and futuristic is something that the band do well, and makes them a real stand-out in British music right now.
‘Love It If We Made It’ is a song that attempts to deal with numerous issues that are going on in the world right now. The lyrics diversely cover this wide range of problems - with its subject matter ranging from racism, the US president and refugees. This may seem like a lot of individual issues to merge together in one song, yet somehow it all fits together into a beautiful and well-rounded piece of music.
Lead singer Matty Healy uses his passionate vocals to convey the frustration and anger with the world and its issues, truly carrying the song to a new level for the group. One particular lyric that is repeated throughout the song says “modernity has failed us”, and Healy’s portrayal of this through vocals alone is quite remarkable.
Despite the negative focus of the song and nature of the issues that it covers, the band somehow still manage to convey some optimism. The song’s chorus repeats the title continually, with Healy repeating the line “I’d love it if we made it”. This lyric causes listeners - myself included - to believe that maybe there is a way to overcome this. Maybe we can make it.
The first two singles from their upcoming album have proven to be a great success, and based on these alone I personally cannot wait until it’s release later this year. The band have also confirmed they will be touring next year, and hearing this song live will be an experience I do not want to miss.
