Twenty-Øne Piløts "Trench"

After completely taking off with their 2015 album ‘Blurryface,’ Twenty One Pilots, from Ohio, are returning with a new album entitled ‘Trench’.

The album’s release date is the 5th of October but after many cryptic hints on the musical duo’s website and social medias, the boys dropped two tracks from it earlier this week and announced a massive tour starting the week following the album’s release.

The first track released is titled ‘Jumpsuit’ and straight off the bat you can hear that the guys are going for something a little different with this album. The track starts with a heavy instrumental driven by the bold bass-line, created by Josh on Drums, and suddenly drops to Tyler Joseph’s calm vocals. It creates a very eerie, and quite dark vibe. The heavy instrumental then returns, and it feels like two songs in one, much like the first track of their 2013 album ‘Vessel’; ’Ode to Sleep’. What impressed me most in this track, however, was Tyler’s use of screaming which, for me, took the song to a whole new level.

After listening to the first track, I didn’t really know what to expect from the second 'Nico And The Niners’. Before starting this review I watched a couple of youtube reactions to the tracks and ‘ellenawhat’ described this song as “badass but in a super chill way”. I don’t think it can be put any better.

The song begins with what sounds like nonsense but is actually reversed lyrics “We are banditos, You will leave Dema and head true east, We denounce Vialism” which I can only assume is linked to the theme of the album. The track flows into a slightly reggae beat and features lots of vocal effects and a rapped verse from Tyler. ‘Nico and the Niners’ in definitely my favourite of the two.

Twenty One Pilots are very good at creating something really special with their music, each album almost represents a different world, with a running motif throughout each. Both tracks definitely sounded like Twenty One Pilots - they are keeping to their roots and to the sound people fell in love with - but the duo are definitely changing things up this time round, even altering their colour scheme from red to yellow.

I am very excited to see what this album has to offer.
