PALACE

PALACE

First off, how has your day been?

Days been good. Just got a dodgy haircut done and I feel great.

How did you all meet and how did the band form?

We met at school, we've known each other for half our lives basically. Crazy. We've seen each other at our most awkward in the awkward years, a time no one wants to see.

Have you always had an interest in music?

Yeah we've always been obsessed with music. Our parents had good taste. Lots of amazing mixtapes in the car playing Van Morrison, The Stones, Zeppelin and Joni Mitchell. A good musical education.

What is the creative process behind creating a composition?

I guess it depends. But the usual process is I bring along a basic idea on guitar, several chords and a melody and a few lyrics. Then we build on that and add the bits to make it snazzy Palace sounding. We're not the kind of band that can just jam out a song on the spot. It has to come from outside the studio usually.

Does your music have any major influences?

Course. Jeff Buckley and Wu Lyf were big starting points for us. We always go back to them when we think of what we wanted to go for when starting out. But we never wanted to rip anyone, just general inspiration. Now we get inspired by King Krule, John Martyn, Foals, Angel Olsen and King Gizzard amongst others.

Where or what do you draw inspiration from?

Everywhere really. But mainly just personal experiences, usually the shitty things give inspiration to write and be creative. When I'm feeling particularly low is when I personally feel like I can write. It's weird that it's hard to write a 'happy' song, but it just is.

If you could give your own dictionary definition of your music, What would it be?

Atmospheric Blues Sex Rock.

Where does the band rehearse?

In our studio in Tottenham called The Arch. It's our shitty heaven. Run down and beaten up, bongs all over the place but it's awesome and we love it. We share it with other awesome bands and musicians. We have mad parties there once in a while to raise money to keep it going, they get pretty out of hand in the best way. Turns into a sort of ferrel post apocalyptic after party.

Do you have any crazy or unique stories from being together as a band?

I guess there are a lot but probably things I couldn't say on here.

Do you all have strict roles in the band or are they flexible?

Ha I guess I mean everyone sticks to their instrument if that's what you mean? It's very strict in our band, if you step out of line you get chained to a microphone stand and beaten with wire brushes.

What is your biggest gig to date?

In London recently we headlined Shepherds Bush Empire. That was ridiculously amazing. Hands down best night of our lives. But in terms of crowd it'd have to be Musilac in France. We played to 20,000 people at this beautiful festival. We did a cover of 'You Can't Always Get What You Want' at the end and they all sung along.

Have you ever turned down a gig?

There've been a couple of festivals we played a couple years ago that we've since turned down as they were kinda shitty and just bad vibes. But generally we want to play every show we can. We live for gigging.

Where is your dream gig location?

The moon. In a crater. A kind of lunar version of The Hollywood Bowl.

Where does the incredible art that covers your albums come from?

My brother Wilby does it all. He's the fifth member of Palace really. He also has an amazing music project called Thool. Check it out.

Lastly, What are your future aspirations?

Just to keep making music as Palace. Getting our sounds to the masses and travelling the world doing it. We have a huge determination to tour America extensively too. We have lots of fans there and I think they feel a little neglected at the moment. They just need to know we are planning to go there a lot soon and we can't wait to play for y'all. It's a dream of ours.
