Bad Hombres - Protest As You Please
Louis Jamieson
I woke up this morning and the first thing I did was put on this EP. I listened while in the shower. I listened while brushing my teeth. I made my mum listen to it in the car. I’m listening to it the now, as I write this. After listening to it on repeat all day, I can now firmly say this EP is fucking banging.
Opening up with a filthy guitar riff, Theresa on the Guillotine gets straight to the point. Bad Hombres don’t find her very agreeable and seeing as much of the scottish punk scene don’t either, I feel this song is very much a crowd pleaser. Released as a single back in December, I’ve been listening to this one for a while and have enjoyed it every time. This goes to show the hombres have massive replay value and I don’t think they’ll go anywhere but up from here on out.
Icarus takes off with an earth-shaking bass tone and proceeds to preach the teachings of a good time. I want to go out and get on it. I fucking will go out and get on it. What an anthem. “Are you feeling satisfied?”, He sneers at me. Aye. I am, this tune is top quality. As the song hits the 2 minute mark a searing guitar solo kicks in. Not sure what he’s doing but I fucking like it anyway.
Don’t Panic Steven I think has one of my favourite choruses of all time. It’s got a sort of distant sound, almost like it’s coming from space. I might be high but the word ethereal comes to mind. Can a song be ethereal and heavy at the same time? Aye it can and this is it and it’s class. I wonder now if Stevens panic was warranted. I think it was.
Now for my favourite track. I like it because I’ve been there and as good as that smoothie was… the song is better. Trans Europe Cafe sounds retro without sounding old fashioned. I honestly fuckin’ love how this song kicks in. “YOU ARE!” So class. The lyrics of this song are banging, sung in that iconic gravely voice. The bass in the second verse is funky as fuck. The guitar sounds amazing, almost like a keyboard. I mean it might be a keyboard but if it’s a guitar it sounds amazing. I feel it’s like what an alien abduction would sound like. As the song draws to a close it builds and builds and they create a soundscape. Couple of woo woo’s in there. Can’t go wrong. I also want to give a shout out to the drummer. I don’t know much about drumming but it sounds like the EP wouldn’t be the same without the cunt - good job mate.
In conclusion, listen to this EP. This band has a lot to say and I feel like in the future folk will look back on Protest as You Please as the epitome of Scottish Punk. Turn it on and turn it up.
