Debauched Music For You and Your Friends
From clashy to melodic, spit-in-your-face to charming, ‘Debauched Music For You and Your Friends’ strikes every chord and pulls on every emotion you didn’t know you even had in your body. This album finds remarkable balance between catchy and music with an edge, staying true to The Stoned Immaculate’s defining sound but evolved as cleaner, louder, stronger and one that is pushing them from small-time to sold-out.
When I met The Stoned Immaculate last year, the collective of humble guys persisted that they made music simply because they loved it and nothing else. Back then, their expectations for themselves seemed limited, their music was suited to their own tastes and not trying to be something mainstream to please others. It might just happen that it was this attitude towards the art of song-writing which has resulted in such a unique aura to their music. In turn, not wanting to conform has meant that The Stoned Immaculate are standout, leaving music-lovers hungry for this exclusive sound that can’t be found on the charts.
Upon hearing the album through, it became apparent that The Stoned Immaculate really are creating music that isn’t being touched up, perfected or taken too seriously. The whole energy of the tracks and the title itself scream rawness and roughness, with the likes of your mates playing music at a party, unfiltered and with the intentions of a good time. ‘Ukulele Interlude’ particularly demonstrates the laid-backness of the listening experience, the intro to the song a distant playful discussion between the friends. Lighthearted and clever lyrics that blend so well with heavy tones and quick-paced rhythms produce a charming result. This alongside their Glasgow spin on Brit-pop makes Debauched Music an intimate and quirky listen, drawing you into the world of youthful times and blasé.
From what I hear with this new era of The Stoney Macs, their near future might just transform them from their up-and-coming status to what proceeds. What comes after ‘up-and-coming’ anyway? I guess ‘there’. I guess that’s when you’ve made it. And I think the boys have just about made it. From a place in the spotlight to a place in our hearts. This album is definitely one of my frequent-listens right now and I can imagine that anyone else hearing it once is returning time and time again just like me. Going back for that inexplainable sensation of instantly feeling lifted by music that The Stoned Immaculate do so well.
With a jam-packed lineup of gigs ahead of them, their biggest to-date being their London 02 Islington performance on the 29th September, there is every chance to catch the spectacle live!
