INTERVIEW: Tommy O'Dell | DMA'S
Our very own Rachael Anderson speaks with Tommy O’Dell, frontman of DMA’S;
You recently announced your MTV Unplugged album; what does that mean to you as artists? It must be a huge thing to follow in the footsteps of massive artists such as Nirvana and Paul McCartney?
“It’s definitely something we are happy to say we’ve done. We’re so glad that MTV have brought back that iconic programme slot.”
After the release of the MTV Unplugged album, is there anything that can be expected soon in terms of brand new music?
“There will be new music toward the end of the year; we’re working on it now.”
If new music is on the way what can we expect of what’s to come? Will the new tracks follow a similar route to previous releases or will there be changes?
“I feel that DMA’S will always have a distinct sound but, yeah, there will be changes. It would be boring for us if there weren’t some changes in how we approach new music.”
If you were given the opportunity to make an album of a completely opposite genre to what you usually do, would you try it to experiment with something new?
“A full-blown dance record, and to work with someone like Orbital. Yeah, for sure, why not!”
It must be such a cool thing to be given opportunities like MTV Unplugged; what has been your most memorable opportunity as a band, one that you’ll cherish forever?
“Playing the sunset slot at Splendour in The Grass in 2018.”
If you were given the opportunity to collaborate with any artist at all who would you like to work with?
“At the moment, I’d love to collaborate with Aphex Twin.”
As a band, you have already been hugely successful and we can only imagine greater things in the future. If this wasn’t the case, what do you think you’d be doing right now?
“Working for a label probably.”
If DMA’S could only be remembered for one thing, what would you want that to be?
“Our cover of ‘Believe’! Haha. Nah, I dunno, loving our fans, being respectful, making honest music.”
As a key band in the current scene, does that add any pressure to you?
“No. Everyone is on their own course.”
Finally, your gigs are very well known for having extremely lively crowds; what is your favourite song to play live that you think really connects with the audience?
“In the Air.”
We’d like to thank Tommy for his time in answering these questions, and Ian for organising everything.
