REVIEW: Dude Trips Album Release Show // 8/6/2019
Having formed in mid-2016, Dude Trips have had plenty of time to fine-tune their voice and personal style. The alternative pop-punk quartet are enjoying a burst of popularity following the release of their debut album ‘Through Love and Death, You’re All I Have Left.’ Highly anticipated by fans, even their expectations were exceeded by the intensely emotional record. Their previous releases, the two EPs ‘Sad Lads’ and ‘Keepsake’ (released in 2017 and 2018 respectively) both stand as testaments to the band’s musicality. When the album release show at Tunnels was announced, the tickets sold incredibly fast along with their vinyl records – which are still available at HMV. The two support bands were a great lead-in but couldn’t have stolen the spotlight from them even if they tried. With an intensely loyal fanbase and undeniable charm, Dude Trips commanded the attention of the crowd right from the start of their set. They kicked off with a new song called ‘&’ (the opening of which sounds somewhat like ‘Ferrari’ by Bebe Rexha) swiftly followed by ‘Documentaries’, which is a hook-laden pop- punk belter about watching a relationship fall apart. During the performance of fan favourite ‘Tampa Bay’, the entire crowd began to enthusiastically shout along with every word of the song. The power of Dude Trips is that they connect so deeply with their audience, that their words equally hit and heal us where it hurts. They chose not to perform ‘Kit’, a song written in kindness for a girl that passed away in 2017. It’s heart wrenching, honest and hard to overlook. Perhaps too emotional for a less intimate venue like Tunnels and a crowd with many newcomers. Either way, the show was incredible. Dude Trips have a way of bringing together different groups of the Aberdeen music scene that is unrivalled and would’ve previously seemed impossible.
With their tour starting in early July, they’ll be keeping busy with shows all over the UK. If pop-punk or post-emo is something that you typically enjoy (or even if it isn’t) I would wholeheartedly recommend that you grab a ticket to a Dude Trips gig.
