REVIEW: Refuge Island | Fighting In The Disco

Words by Scott Simpson:

Amidst the shouting, dancing and tossing of almost empty pints, Refuge Island kickstart a disco scrap with the launch of their new banger; Fighting In The Disco. You can picture the crowd and all hell breaking loose as the raspy voice of singer Wullie Ri shouts “1, 2, 3” and the rest of the band join in with an aggressively melodic chord progression, and drums that hit like a kick to the jaw. Jesus, this song is good. It has electrifying power chords changing before your very ears of comprehension.

On March 29th, the Scottish band released their second belter of a single; sending sonic shockwaves through the punk scene of Scotland. Their fist single; Above Board is a fast-paced modern love tune, with a darker take on having strong feelings for someone. However, Fighting In The Disco highlights the band’s ideals paired with their middle-finger-to-the-man image.

Refuge Island have a clear inspiration from bands such as Slaves, The Clash and The Sex Pistols. Bassist John Martin points the band in the right direction with extremely funky and banging tones. The drummer Steven Andrews carries the island on a wave of rapid beats, while the chords of power are struck by Darren Mitchel.

I recommend you share this band and their banging two singles with all of the punk rockers you call pals. Make sure to do that before they make it big ,and you can say “I’ve been with them since the start” .

With their raw sound and modern hold of punk rock, Refuge Island are setting the bar even higher for great Scottish music.
