The Best Bands You've Never Heard Of
Rachael Anderson
Over the years there have been many upcoming bands, that deserve the spotlight due to their true raw talent, however haven’t quite made it due to the lack of attention shown towards them. Usually this is because of lack of publicity but many of these bands are really deserving of widespread attention. It’s time these great bands are now appreciated and brought to light how amazing they really are, it’s time they show off their talent.
It’s a wonderful thing to support your local bands, for me I have a band entitled ‘The Vanities’ from Glasgow and I really enjoy their almost punk, slightly rock, very The Libertines style of music. However, they do only have a moderately small following, comprised of a couple hundred dedicated listeners on Spotify. It’s bands like such we should be supporting. Same with those like The Dunts and The Snuts, who both started from similar backgrounds as The Vanities but having managed to make a name for themselves though local support. Now they have the potential to progress their name even further to make something greater for themselves in the wider music industry and although both are relatively small names at the moment I can see something big blossoming in the future. Which is most definitely well-deserved as each band have a very great sound and have produced numerous amounts of amazing indie rock tracks, that everyone needs to hear.
Afar from local bands, if you ever come across smaller bands that you enjoy, tell your friends about them, share their music about. One particularly small band that I very much enjoy are Sheffield girl group, The Seamonsters (pictured above). They’re very much an edgy Spice Girls, but they have a lot more to give than that, as they are unlike anything else in the indie market which is unusual as everything just seems to be recycled nowadays. I have a lot of time for artists who can create their own styles and be creative with their music to make something new, and The Seamonsters tick that box. No Hot Ashes do something very similar, in a way they make very unique music, which is greatly appreciated. I love their fast pace, and groove.
Currently I have a strong fondness towards alternative rock/hip-hop artists, as I find the juxtaposition of both genres work exceptionally well together. A band I think well and truly pull of this style are The Skinner Brothers, their music is so effortlessly cool, it’s the type of mellow hip-hop that just makes you feel very calm yet makes you want to dance, it’s a strange sensation but I love it. Falling under the same style are Bad Sounds, now I can’t comprehend why they would entitle their name this as they sound amazing with an ace funky groove and a sensational energy emitted from their tunes.
I just love it all.
In likeness to alternative hip-hop, another band I greatly appreciate is alternative punk band, Lady Bird. The best way to describe their sound is that it’s like a constructed mess, which really works in their favour. Mess isn’t always bad, mess can prove thriving creativity, the music they’re creating is very much everything, due to the mass amount of sound it lacks in absolutely nothing. It’s a perfect mess.
I think it’s very important to expand your music library and discover new artists, as there is always a new favourite artist, song, album waiting out there for you, who knows what you’ll find, just keep listening. So, get out there and just keep listening, who knows what you may come across.
